Crystal realized Jim wasn’t going to let go of her hand. She let him pull her along behind him. She still couldn’t believe the intensity of that kiss. She had never been effected so quickly and strongly by a man’s touch. She knew she was relatively inexperienced for her age because of her focus on her profession. It had been at least six months since her last date, well maybe longer than that as she thought about it.

Shaking her head, she focused on her surroundings. The living room was painted in a light teal color, matching the southwestern decor. The fireplace on the far wall looked well used with plenty of wood stacked next to it, causing Crystal to notice how the smell of burnt wood lightly brushed the air. Jim’s son, David, stood leaning on the mantle looking like a younger version of his father. There was a dark brown leather couch with teal and white throw pillows. Two chestnut colored cloth chairs sat opposite the couch. David’s girlfriend sat on the edge of one of the chairs. Her hair was black with blonde highlights. Her skin was almost as pale as Crystal’s.

Jim sat on the couch pulling Crystal down beside him. “I guess it is time you met Crys. Crystal Werner this is my son and his girlfriend.”

David’s expression was bleak. “Who is she?” He asked, his head nod indicating Crystal.

Jim sighed. He glanced at Crystal his eyes holding an apology. “Crystal and I are dating.” Jim released her hand and rose from the couch. “David, lets talk in private.”

David followed Jim toward the kitchen. He paused as he reached the doorway and turned back to Crystal. “I’m sorry if I am being rude to you Crystal. There are things you don’t understand.” And with that cryptic statement he stepped from the room.

Crystal sighed. Who knew getting a dog could be so complicated? But she had agreed to a date and she appreciated that Jim was protecting her by not telling his son they had just met. The kiss in the kitchen was not really appropriate for two relative strangers. Crystal couldn’t regret it though and was looking forward to the evening when she and Jim could be alone again. Crystal noticed that David’s girlfriend was staring at her. Well maybe I can be of some help here.

“Hi. As you heard I am Crys. I didn’t catch your name.” Well if charm wasn’t her skill she could always fall back on politeness.

“It’s Megan. What’s, I mean, what’s going on? We were suppose to come over to discuss the trip to Europe and David saw you and flipped out.”

“I’m not sure but I think he was a little surprised that his dad is dating.”

“Um, wow. David always talked about how all the women that were after his dad. You’d think he wouldn’t be surprised that he would date.”

Crystal stowed that knowledge away for future use. But she wasn’t going to give Megan the satisfaction of reacting to what was obviously a loaded statement. So she smiled instead and changed the subject. “So you’re planning a trip to Europe. Jim mentioned that. Something about a disagreement on how long the trip is for?”

“Um, yeah. You could say that.” Megan looked down and rubbed her hands on her jeans. Crystal wondered if it was a nervous gesture.

Suddenly David’s voice could be heard from the kitchen. “But she’s a bilagaana!”

Jim’s response was muffled in reply but David’s follow-on comment was clear as day. “Yeah, but I am not planning on MARRYING one.”

Both Crystal and Megan’s heads turned to the doorway leading to the kitchen at the mention of marriage. Crystal would wait for more data but even talking of marriage was crazy. They had just met. She didn’t know anything about Jim other than he was hot and kissed like a dream.

“What’s a bils... a bila...?” Megan’s question pulled Crystal from her thoughts.

“Bilagaana,” she finished for Megan. “It means someone who is not part of the Navajo nation. White man, or in this case white woman.” Crystal watched as Megan digested that reply.

“So he isn’t planning on marrying a white woman.” Megan sounded shaken. “I thought, well I thought he loved me more than I cared for him. What am I to him? A status symbol? A fun fuck?” Megan stood up.

Crystal looked at her with compassion in her eyes. “Megan. You both are young. It doesn’t sound like you were planning on marriage anyway.”

“No. I wasn’t but I mean that is kind of cold isn’t it, being his white woman fling.” Megan walked toward the kitchen. The voices of the men were back down to a murmur. “David. I’m leaving. I’ll drive you back now or you can stay here.”

David rushed out into the living room as Megan was opening the front door. “What the fuck, Megan? Can’t you see I need some time to talk to my dad?”

“No, David. No, this white woman can’t see that at all. Asshole.” Megan said icily as she walked out the front door, slamming it behind her.

“Shit.” David bit out as he rushed after her.

Crystal rose from the couch and looked out the window. David dove into the passenger side of the car as Megan started it. They drove off together with David gesturing wildly. Crystal looked at her own car and thought about just getting in and leaving this whole confusing afternoon behind her. But she remembered the easy banter she had with Jim. The kiss was a bonus, but to find a man she could really talk to, well that meant too much just to throw it away. She sighed and turned and walked into the kitchen. Jim was standing leaning against the stove. His expression appeared guarded.

Crystal smiled at him. “Well, I don’t think you have to worry about Europe any more.”

Jim burst out laughing. “No. I suppose not.” His expression grew serious. “To be honest, I stopped worrying about that the moment we kissed.” He looked away from Crystal. “That was a mess. Are you okay?”

Crystal walked closer and leaned on the counter next to the stove. “I thought about leaving.” She said staring at the floor. “Can you explain the marriage comment?”

Jim ran his hand over his face. “Sounds a little crazy, I know, but David pissed me off. He was objecting to you in general and specific terms. Seems he had someone else picked out for me. I think I said something like ... it’s not like I have asked her to marry me ...yet.”

“I’m betting it was the ‘yet’ that set him off.” Crystal grinned feeling relief that Jim made the comment to challenge his son.

“You might be right.” Jim grinned back.

“Crys, I had no idea. No idea, that any of this would be an issue to him. I would still like to date you, to see where this can go between us. But I would understand if you want to walk away. Hell, I would understand if you want to run screaming from this madhouse.”

“Is this something he is going to get over, or is this going to be there? I don’t want to be the cause of a split between you two.”

“My first reaction is he damn well better get over it. I don’t know. He shocked me. Who knew he harbored hope that his mother and I would get back together?”

Crystal’s eyebrows raised. How am I expected to compete with the mother of his child?

“Don’t look at me like that. There is no way I am getting near that woman again. She took off when David was a baby. I have had no contact with her for over eighteen years. She is back, though, and I guess she is in contact with David.”

“Jim, you don’t owe me an explanation.” Relief flooded Crystal.

“Hell.” Jim turned and stood directly in front of Crystal. He placed his hands on either side of her face, leaned down and kissed her. They both reacted, immediately leaning in to each other. Crystal instinctively stood on her toes to get closer to him. Jim forced his lips away from hers. “I owe it to you. I owe it to myself to explore this. I’ve never reacted to a woman so quickly, so strongly. Are you really willing to walk away from this?”

Crystal stood still, her face cradled in Jim’s hands. “If it was only the chemistry I would have left already.”

“But there is more. I know, we talk. Really talk. You practically read my mind. It’s as if our spirits mesh.”

Crystal closed her eyes and nodded. Opening them, she made up her mind. “I want this. I want to try.”

The relief was evident on Jim’s face. “You will remind me to take this slow. I want to make this work. I want to know you, all of you, including your workaholic tendencies.” Jim teased.

A stray thought ran across Crystal’s mind. “Do I still get a puppy?”

Jim leaned in and brushed his lips against Crystal’s. “No one has ever called me a puppy before.” He whispered with a grin.

A New Puppy --- Part 7

Jim stared into her eyes. He realized by her pleading expression that this attraction he felt wasn’t just one way. She didn’t want to leave any more than he wanted her to go. This was moving too fast though. He shouldn’t feel this strongly about someone he just met. He stood and walked around the table while they listened to the car coming closer. Holding out his hand to her, Jim knew he should have felt nervous. But all he felt was anticipation. Change was coming and he was embracing it, like he was running with the wind.

Crystal looked at Jim’s large hand. Her right hand moved toward his slowly and steadily.

“Who are you?” Jim asked her, his voice sounding strangled. “I don’t want you to leave.”

“I don’t want to leave.” Crystal admitted to him, her voice barely a whisper as she weaved her fingers through his.

Jim leaned down bringing his lips next to Crystal’s. “I will do this right. I would like to ask you on a date, Crystal. Many dates. We will take this slow.” As he spoke Jim’s lips lightly brushed against Crystal’s. He restrained himself from fully kissing her. The sounds of the car grew louder in the background. But now that he was this close to Crystal he couldn’t pull back. It was all he could do not to press forward. He deliberately held her loosely so she could back away if she wanted.

Jim watched her beautiful green eyes widen with desire. Her right hand was entangled with his but he felt her left hand on his back, sliding upward. He focused on the heat her sliding hand left on his body. He stiffened trying to resist the additional temptation but she continued moving her hand until it cupped the back of his large neck. Then using it as leverage she pulled them together to complete the kiss Jim had begun.

They both groaned as their lips fully met. Jim’s free hand grasped her more strongly to him as he explored her mouth. Crystal’s softness had him groaning again with need. Too fast. We’re moving too fast. But damned if he could slow down. His body was responding to hers. She was soft and wet. His tongue was exploring the shape of her lips. He wanted her. Somewhere in the background he could hear a car door slam and then another. Voices, male and female could also be heard. Jim couldn’t care enough to let his focus wander from Crystal’s mouth. Her tongue ran across his lower lip and he needed all his focus not to escalate this further. He pulled her body more tightly to him. He groaned again when she molded herself against him. His erection was growing against the weight of her.

Their breaths became rougher and more desperate as they kissed. Jim couldn’t hold her tight enough. He was afraid to let go of her hand because he knew if he had both hands free he would be tempted to start removing her clothes. As it was he had slid his free hand under the back of her loose over-shirt. Too fast. In an effort to pull her up toward him his hand slid down the length of her back over her cotton camisole. Stop it, he told himself but he didn’t listen. His hand slid down into the back of her pants touching the bare skin of her buttock and the silky smoothness of her panties. She groaned and pressed harder into him as he massaged her skin. Jim hadn’t felt this needy and out of control in years. First kiss and I am mauling her. I need to stop. It was all he could do to keep his hand from sliding further south. He wanted her, all of her.

“Dad?”

Jim whirled so that his back was to his son, keeping Crystal hidden against his body. “Just give us a minute.” He growled as Crystal buried her red face into his chest. Jim slid his hand up to her waist. He knew Crystal was mortified.

“Dad?” His son’s voice was filled with disbelief.

“Come on.” Added a female voice.

He heard them both retreat to the living room. As he continued to hold Crystal to him. Resting his cheek on her head that was against his chest. He tried to slow his breathing but it was difficult as she was still pressed up against him. Well, chemistry isn’t going to be an issue, he thought wryly. My son and his girlfriend are here. I need to focus. He reached down and put his hand on Crystal’s chin, pulling it up so he could look into her eyes. He saw confusion, fear and embarrassment there. “Best ... first ... kiss ... ever.” He said his voice barely above a whisper.

She smiled up at him. “Me too.” Her expression changed to pleasure and teasing.

“Hold that thought. Go out to dinner with me tonight?”

She nodded.

“I think I need to handle my visitors. Come with me?”

“Wait.” Crystal called out quietly. Jim looked at her expectantly. “What are their names?”

“My son is David. He has told me her name but I don’t remember it.”

“Jim.” Crystal said chidingly. He just smiled back at her. “Ready?”

Crystal nodded in response.

Crystal stared down at the table before responding. “I haven’t had too much luck with the two legged variety. I need a partner that I can’t ignore when my next research project catches my attention. One that won’t get angry at me for not listening to how their day went. I can be a rather selfish person when the research catches me.” Crystal couldn’t believe it. This man just seemed to pull the most embarrassing information from her. Well, damn it. This was her. Her work was important to her. Too bad men’s egos didn’t seem to be able to handle that.

Jim looked away from Crystal as he asked the next question. “In my culture a dog would be a family member. Are you prepared to add to your family?”

Crystal considered Jim’s question. She knew by his stillness that the bantering was over and he wanted, no almost seemed to need, a true answer. She gathered her thoughts before speaking.

“If I understand correctly, the Navajo’s believe that we are all relations. All the animals and the humans. So I think I understand the nature of your question. Would I be willing to treat my dog with the same respect as a son or a daughter? I would like to think that I would treat them with more care than that. A human, at least an adult, has the ability to make choices and be independent from their parent. A pet is tied more strongly. They don’t have the choice to leave and start an independent life. It will be up to me to provide for the welfare and happiness of my dog.” Crystal gained the confidence as she spoke her voice developing a firmness. “I recognize that will require me to modify my behavior. My work will have to be put aside for the needs of my dog. I think I am ready to do this. To find a better balance in my life.”

Jim paused as if considering her response. “You have given this a lot of thought. What happens if you fail?”

Crystal bit her lip. “It could happen. This is one reason I am asking help from you. If I am an ‘unfit owner’....” Crystal trailed off. She placed her hands flat on the table before her. Taking a deep breath she continued. “I don’t tend to fail at what I decide to do. I need to develop some balance in my life and so I will. I will be a good partner with my dog.” Crystal was determined to work this in a positive manner. She would not let thoughts of failure interfere with her goals.

Jim nodded respect showing on his face. He flicked open the binder on the table with work roughened fingers. “I am familiar with four or five Burnese breeders. But not all are in this state. His finger ran down the page as he scanned his own notes. “I haven’t updated this in a while. I’ll need to make some calls.” Jim glanced at Crystal. “Do you have some time? I could....”

“Sh!” Crystal cocked her head to the side as she listened.

Jim stilled in response to Crystal’s request. The sound of a car engine grew louder. The sound of rap music competed with the engine’s rumbles.

“Shit. I’d forgotten her,” Jim muttered.

Crystal turned quickly toward Jim. “Would you let me help you?” She asked, her voice tight. Crystal felt the tension rise between them as she worried about rejection.

Jim looked at her closely. She was small, well, more thin than small. She appeared delicate but there was intelligence shining in her pretty green eyes. Jim was caught up watching the expressions fly across Crystal’s face. Her intelligence seemed to show through more now as she dropped the meek smile. "Actually that was pretty good advice. Why was my idea about the clothing good?"

Crystal shrugged. "The choice of the shirt does two things. First, it reminds her that you and your son are part of something she isn't. I assume that since you thought I was her, that she isn't native?"

Jim grew more interested in the conversation. "Good assumption. And the second reason?"

Crystal colored again. "You wear it well. Looking good helps with confidence and energy. These are both excellent tools for negotiation."

"Thanks." Jim couldn't remember the last time he had received a compliment from a young women. This girl must be five to ten years his junior. But she had very pretty eyes and he enjoyed her innate honesty. He realized he needed to adjust his thoughts. She was only here for a breeder recommendation and what did she say; ‘advice on timing’?

"Well enough about me, you want a recommendation on a Burnese Mountain Dog?" Jim rose and grabbed one of several binders off the shelf and turned back toward the table. He wasn’t sure but he might have caught a look of disappointment on her face.

"Yes, yes I do. I also want some recommendation on timing. You know, what age is best to bring a puppy into a household. But could I ask one more question?"

"Of course." Jim said sitting back down at the table.

"Why is she a bad influence?"

"She wants him to tour Europe with her. At first I saw no issue with it, as they were going over the summer. But now she wants him to take a semester off college to extend the trip. He'll lose his scholarship. But she's convinced him he can get a job when they get back."

"Oh? What about her? Is she in college?"

"She is graduating this spring. They plan to leave right after her graduation."

"Bitch. Selfish little conniving bitch."

"My thoughts exactly. But to be fair, I don't think it’s all her. I believe my son is afraid to let her be on her own in Europe. He not only worries about her safety but the potential competition."

"Ah, the lure of the sexy accent."

"So is that all if takes now-a-days? A little French accent and all the woman will be at my feet?" Jim’s face lit up with a grin as he realized how much he enjoyed teasing Crystal.

"Not for me. I prefer the British accent." Crystal grinned back at Jim.

"Have a bit of a thing for chimney sweeps?"

"Ha! Dick Van Dyke's accent was terrible!" Jim was pleased that she had followed his vague reference to Mary Poppins.

"You'd have thought that Disney could have afforded a better voice coach for him."

Jim abruptly realized that he was flirting with the young blonde woman and, even better, she was flirting back. It had been a long time since he had even felt like making the effort. But he wanted to get to know Crystal more, she seemed to be able to follow his thoughts. It was going to take a long time to help her pick out a dog if he had anything to say about it.

Leaning closer to Crystal he asked softly, "Why a Burnese?"

Crystal instinctively leaned in closer as well. "I need a hiking partner."

“They come in the two legged varieties as well you know.”

A New Puppy --- Part 4

"Oh! So you're going for the 'me heap-um big mean Indian' look." Crystal blurted out. She bit her lip but, as usual couldn't keep her opinion to herself. Crystal knew the effort to look forbidding was unlikely to work. The shirt fit him too well to scare a woman.

Jim laughed out loud. "I don't know whether to be offended or laugh my ass off," he teased Crystal.

"Well I am glad the big scary Indian decided to laugh." Crystal smiled back at Jim. "I don't think it will work, you know."

Jim's eyebrows rose. "What do you mean? It worked on you."

"No it didn't. I mean, I was surprised by your abruptness but my biggest problem was I was trying to be charming. And I suck at that! Besides she will expect your attitude as I assume your son has shared the issues with her."

Jim paused as he mulled that over. "Wait. Why did you give up on the charming?" He asked with a smile.

"I just figured if you laughed at my stupid heap-em comment, I didn't need to try so hard." Crystal realized she was enjoying this conversation which was unusual for her. Outside of work colleagues, she normally had to try hard to keep the talk flowing.

"What do you recommend, since you think 'big scary Indian' is off the table?" Jim asked breaking into her thoughts.

"Oh. Hm. You could still do scary Indian if you want but if she is used to manipulating men, she is likely to see through it. What about your wife talking to her? It may be harder for her to get around a woman."

"No wife. Next suggestion?"

"Girlfriend? Sister? Daughter?"

"My sister might be a good idea actually. But since the boy's girlfriend is supposed to be here any moment, I'll have to do the first meeting without her. Why are you so convinced that a woman's touch is needed?"

"Well, I was reading some research on how to influence people and the approach was different for a man than a woman. She could be good at manipulating both but it sounds like she is successful with men. Also when in a negotiation it is better to have more people on your team then on the other side. Aside from the obvious intimidation factor it allows one side to distract the focus of the other. Your idea of clothing was good. It sets the tone." Crystal stopped abruptly. "I'm sorry. It can be dangerous to ask a research scientist a question," she said sheepishly.

A New Puppy --- Part 3

Jim set the sweating glass of ice water in front of Crystal. He didn’t want to focus on anything other than the issue with his son’s girlfriend. The woman calmly sipping ice water in front of him was polite and quiet. She turned red in embarrassment at the drop of a hat. He couldn't imagine the meek woman before him having that big of an impact on anyone. Best to get her on her way as fast as possible since the girlfriend was likely to arrive soon.

"So Crys, you want some advice on selecting a dog?" Jim asked as he sat down. He stayed on the edge of his seat though as he was anxious to get the conversation over with before the girlfriend arrived. Jim guessed that, as a tiny woman, she would want a small lap dog like a terrier or a Shih Tzu.

"Actually, I've selected the dog breed. I am looking for recommendations on reputable breeders as well as some advice on timing."

Timing? Jim had no idea what she meant by that. "I am most familiar with the sporting and larger dog breeders. But I could hook you up with some people that deal with the smaller breeds."

"But I am looking for a Burnese Mountain dog. That isn't exactly a small breed." Crystal blurted out.

Jim sat back with a start. He usually considered himself a good read of people. But he was not doing well with this woman. He chalked it up to his distraction with the girlfriend.

"It looks like I keep guessing wrong about you." Jim, thinking it best to come clean, continued with his confession. "I'm a little distracted. My son's girlfriend is suppose to stop by today. I don't like the influence she has on him. Hence the native look." Jim indicated the beading going down his chest.

A little glossy paper, a cuttlebug embossing folder, some sandpaper and some distress ink.

I also added in a little Basic Grey ribbon and a Hero arts stamp. The sample uses a Stampin Up heart punch which is double popped.

A New Puppy --- Part 2

She got a quick impression of a living room and a hallway toward what she assumed was the kitchen. But all she really saw with any detail was some beautiful white tile with a soft beige pattern running through it. There were strong brown rugs strategically placed on the floor as well. Crystal focused on the rugs as she kept her head down, letting her blonde hair swing forward over her red cheeks. Oh why do I have to be so white? "Oh no coffee for me. It isn't necessary. I am just looking for some help on finding a reputable dog breeder." Crystal snapped her mouth shut afraid she would start babbling in her nervousness.

"I insist," Jim said "I can't believe I was so rude to you. My son said his girlfriend might stop by and I could hear the music you were listening to in the car. Loud screaming rock music, small car, small woman, blonde hair, I just assumed you were her."

Crystal's face went red again at his description of her musical preferences. He led her to a chair. "Sit down and I'll pour you a cup of coffee. How do you take it?"

"I, well at the risk of offending you again, I don't take it. I don't like coffee. I don't even like coffee flavored things. The closest I get is a shot of Kahlua in my hot chocolate." Crystal took a deep breath steadying herself. What was it about this man that made her want to babble? "If you have some ice water that would be great," she smiled what she hoped was a charming smile.

Jim paused his actions and looked at her closely. "You have caught me in another assumption," he said studying her. "What do you normally drink?"

"Diet soda or ice water. Sometimes tea. Really ice water would be great."

Jim nodded and smiled at her before he went to fill a glass for her. Crystal sat staring after Jim. The forbidding dark man had suddenly turned into a sexy tall man with long dark hair. Crystal grew even more nervous. She just needed help picking a dog breeder nothing more than that. Besides the man had kids, that meant he was married. She shouldn't be thinking things like she wanted to think about, with a married man.

Paint Resist

I loved this technique --- It results in such a pretty effect.

I painted the cardstock to match.

Used a Tim Holtz stap with Distress Ink, and a Stampin Up scallop punch.

Trapped Emboss Resist

This class is such a blast and I am learning a ton of new techniques!

I made two examples of the trapped emboss resist technique.

The basic technique is to have a pattern in the base of the resist - you can stamp the pattern in or use pattern paper.

This one I stamped with the brown in using a script stamp by hero arts, then stamped over with a combination of a flower stamp from Close to My Heart and a heart stamp from Stampin' Up - I think I would like to try this again sometime using the same color on the stamp as I use to color the paper afterward. But I do like how this turned out as well.

This one is using patterned paper --- the flower stamp is from Close to My Heart, the patterned paper is Basic Grey, the ink is Tim Holtz (as usual!) The background paper is the unaltered pattern paper.

A New Puppy --- Part 1

As promised here is the first part of a short story I wrote.

Crystal waited for the final threads of the song to finish before turning off the car. Charm, she reminded herself, I know how to charm people. If she told herself enough times it might actually be true.

While exiting the car, she noted the house looked just as her coworker Mike Green had described it. The rounded adobe walls were a slightly darker brown than the surrounding dirt. There was a burst of color provided by the flower pots just to the left of the doorway. The green with pink blooms were a welcome relief to the overwhelming brown of this New Mexico high desert home. Crystal took her time viewing the rolling landscape before walking slowly toward the front door. Mike had warned her that Jim Tse could be a little gruff. “Charm him,” he'd told her.

"Okay. Here goes nothing.” Crystal said under her breath as she reached her hand up to knock on the door.

But before she could rap on the front door it swung open. The man standing before her appeared to be full Navajo. His cheek bones were sculpted high in his face. His skin tone was near the same warm brown as the walls of his home. His long black hair pulled back from his face in a low pony tail. He wore what appeared to be an Indian suede shirt with beautiful beading and embroidery around the throat and down the front. Crystal followed the intricate pattern of the beading with her eyes. Realizing she appeared to be staring at the man's chest, Crystal looked back up to his face. His eyes were dark and glittering.

Glittering with what appeared to be anger judged by his forbidding expression. Uh oh. Charm, remember to charm him. She chanted in her mind.

"Hi!" She said with a quick smile. "My name is Crystal Werner. Well, Crys. You must be Jim."

Since Crystal's hand was already raised to knock she extended it forward in an effort to shake his hand. Jim slowly and deliberately crossed his arms in front of him, pointedly ignoring her proffered hand.

She gulped and stepped back slightly. Crystal bit her lip as she was unsure what to say to such a reception. Jim moved his stance to what closely approximated a military parade rest. "Perhaps you should state your business," he growled, his voice a deep bass.

"Uh, Mike Green recommended you? He said you could help me find a dog?" Nervousness made her voice rise changing what she meant to be statements into questions.

Jim's forbidding face slowly changed into a surprised expression. "You're not dating my son?" The words were blurted out in a confused tone.

"No. No. I am not dating anyone." Crystal quickly assured him. "And I would be unlikely to date someone as young as I am sure your son is." As the words fell out of her mouth Crystal felt her face turning red. In her surprise she had said more than she had meant to. The heat she felt on her cheeks grew until they felt sunburned.

"I think I owe you an apology," Jim said slowly a look of contrition on his face. "Come on in. Let me get you a cup of coffee. I make some pretty good coffee, or so they tell me." Jim backed away from the doorway and Crystal felt herself walking forward as she looked at her feet trying to hide her flaming cheeks.

Traditional Resist

I signed up for this online class called inspiration show case and today is the first day. She went over 5 resist techniques. Due to schedule limitations I have only done the first technique so far. It is resist on glossy paper. So far the class is AMAZING.

OK - this blog went on hold as I worked on my new passion of writing. I was unsure if crafting would still play an important part of my life or not.

I am happy to say that I am balancing both at this point. So whether or not any of you are still out there or I am writing this to myself I have decided to "re-open" the blog.

There have been many changes in my life over the last couple of years, including moving and a new job. But here I will focus on all things creative and as much as possible leave the drama where it belongs!

Saturday Cinema - My Fair Lady

What a fun film!
I was inspired by all the beautiful outfits they dressed Eliza in. And the colors, white, black and reddish pink. She always looked so Chic. And words, words, words.

I used Black magic paper - embossed in my Cuttlebug using the words (of course!) I added some black and white paper that I colored reddish pink with my Koh-i-nor pencils. I added some Bazzill ribbon. I stamped the dress and the word and shoes in Close to My Heart Le Chic stamps using Ranger black ink and embossing. I added stickles and bling to make it all shiny. It "sorta" looks like the dress at the Ball. I added the shoes to the inside.

I have had some scrapping time this weekend and while I am getting REALLY behind on my photos I am enjoying making cards!

I used Creative imaginations patterned paper, Bazzill cardstock, spellbinders cutters (had them forever - thought I should actually USE them!) Autumn Leaves Stamp, Gold Embossing, Gold Stickles, SU Scallop Punch, Ribbon from my stash,Dew Drops Made by Sharon and Pop Dots

The paper reminded me of foreign places and the stamp reminded me of all Bond movies!

was pre-empted by a phone call from a friend needing 5 two page layouts by this weekend. She called Sunday night - so I needed to balance work, had a work friend in from out of town with his wife and child so we had them over for dinner Monday night, Bellas family birthday party is tomorrow and this ROTTEN cold I have.

Anyway the colors she told me to use were hot pink, blue (like crayon blue) and light yellow. Here are the five layouts I made -- mostly I used papers that Jamie sent me black and white ones by Imaginisce. With Bazzil and DCWV solids. I played with flowers and punches and ribbons.

The idea is that they will be handing out white sheets for everyone to write on at the shower (and they will take pictures too) and add the photos --- the bride tends to like things a little simple (hmmmm not me! hehehe) so I tried to restrain myself a little -- I definately used my Layout Blueprints (I have both volumes) for inspiration.

The pics arent the best but I snapped them Thursday morning right before packing and mailing them.

Oh and a little view of my cat Tommy -- who kept me company!

Kristina Werners Color Challenge #44

The hubby went to play at the Winter bluegrass festival last night. So I ended up going to bed early and got up this morning and decided to give Kristina's color challenge a try.

His band is at mosspiglets.com for anyone interested -- my hubby wrote and sang Small Town USA which is my fave of their new album. The CDs are on order -woohoo they are out of the studio! Albums take a LONG time to make!

Anway back to the card:

The base is Junkitz paper -- Also used DCWV (pink pattern), BG (brown pattern and tag), a strip of dark brown Bazzill is under the vellum. I do not remember the name of the vellum maker as it came from my stash. The brads are from Queen and Co. The stamps -- the words are CTMH and the dots are a SU roller. I used Adirondack Earthtones Espresso for stamping and Dark Brown Cats Eye chalk ink for inking the edges. The ribbon is from my LSS and I love it but dont know the brand.

I just thought I'd give you a heads up that I am going on travel for work. I will be gone for two weeks. OK you can't feel sorry for me though as it is in San Diego so I will be WARM! hehehe and my family will be coming out part way through.

Anyway I just purchased the entire works of Jane Austen for the trip. I havent actually read any of them so I figured I would be a "captured audience" this trip.

Cinema Saturday - The Wizard of Oz

The inspiration for this card is twofold ---
First I am missing my daughter Sarah so I wanted to send her a card telling her that and second --- I thought of the poppies scene. My flowers are more brightly colored (I used some brads for the metal) and I used sparkly red letters (for the shoes!)

The Outside and Inside of the card reads "May ... your yellow brick road lead to me. I love you." (edit: fixed typo)

Items -- variance flower stamps (Cats eye inks) and a lot of cutting, Bazzil Paper, brads and stickles, and Tea Dye Embossing powder on the bricks.

OK here is my take on this weeks challenge
I used Bazzill paper, velum, Cats Eye Silver ink, Imaginisce Paper (Gift from Jamie TY!), Tim Hotlz mask (Gift from Lori TY!), Tim Holtz Black Paint Dauber (Gift from Sharon TY!), Art Glitter Ultra Fine (White), Ribbon, Oriental Trading Mini brads, DCWV blue textured paper. Couldnt get this song out of my head --- so here it is

I used blue even though it is not a traditional valentine color to keep the softness of the card.

The patterned paper strips are reminders of the slats (panini!!!hehehe)

This is a close up of the front to "hopefully" show the glitter.

The strip at the bottom is for the person to add a note or sign.

A Long Time

I have been dealing with some personal issues that I wont bore you with --- lets just say that I dropped a few things I loved in order to spend some time fixing some things that needed fixing. While it isnt done things are somewhat better.

A "suppose to be" Sat. Cinema challenge

This is too late for the challenge but I am posting on my blog anyway. A great guy at work is retiring and here is his card. This picture is drawn from Tim Holtz inks using a water pen. Distress and regular stickles were added. The ribbon is basic grey and the stickers are from Stampendous. It is suppose to look like the opening scene in the movie - SIGH!

The inside was originally suppose to be the front cover but I didnt like it well enough -- this was inked with a brayer then stamped (flowers) with bleach - then stamped again with brown ink. I added the hand writing - take time to smell the flowers!

Notebooks

I made a couple more notebooks this weekend. I am hoping to have some time tonight to scrap. I worked long hours all week and had a family party yesterday (happy 2 nd Bday David!) and went Christmas shopping today. Saturday Cinema Challenge

OK - I missed the last TWO! of these so I am taking no chances on what looks like another busy work week. SO here is my entry for Miracle on 34th Street.

I know this line is not in the movie (and that the little girls name is Susan in the movie) but this is what I always think of when I watch this movie. The reference "Yes Virginia There is a Santa Claus comes from a child writing to the Sun Newpaper and the editor answering with the spirit of the season.

The card uses Bazzil Paper and Ribbon I forget the patterned paper brand. The Santa stamp is from Oriental Trading and the Letters are Studio G wooden letters. This is colored in with a combination of Tim Holtz inks (with the SU blender pen), Koh-i-nor pencils with mineral spirits and liquid applique. Brads, floss and a decorative eyelet round it out.

I gave it a shot with this card. The picture didn't catch the silver too well --- love this new ribbon I just got too. This will probably be a card I use for a gift rather then mail due to the dimensions - but I had fun creating it.

Bazzill paper - ribbon is off a role from the scrapbbok store so I don't know, stamp from Northwoods (Greeting and trees) and Oriental Trading (Snow flake). Ranger embossing tinsel. Pretty simple card!

WOW! Definitely my bad!

I started making frames and then I also had to work extra hours last week coz I am taking this week off.

My favorite thing EVER to do is to lie in bed and read which I did yesterday. My hubby even brought me breakfast in bed -- LOVE him! Read The Host - cool book has a bit of the flavor of the Twilight series even if it is a totally different subject matter, I think it should have been named The Soul though.

I was waiting to post the frames until I had them all done and on the wall --- but I am waiting for "spackle man!" Otherwise known as my hubby. He works part time and does runs. Well since everyone else is taking this week off he has had NO time to spackle the wall for me. Hey in this economy we are NOT turning down work! Anyway so I gave up and took a picture of them all laid out on my floor.

Sunday Project

My hubby and I headed up to Duluth yesterday and spent the day with my daughter. So no scrapping but some good memories. So today I was a little tired and my hubby had to go out and play a benefit for a coworker that had to have emergency surgery but has no health insurance. He is in the band the Mosspiglets. Taylored Expressions 42 Challenge

This is the sketch that Taylor provided -- Simple but fun! I decided to play with my piggytales paper I have left from a class I took at CKU. I love their high quality bold patterns. I used their patterned paper and one of their "Barn Doors". Very fun. I also used light and dark purple Bazzill paper. SU Baroque roller stamp, Ink-a-dink-a-doo stamp, Kaiser rhinestones, and misc paper from my stash - oh and of course - popdots!

Beary Challenging!

OK - I admit it - I used a technique I said I didn't like. I have not been liking it when people put different flower colors together because the flowers can't be that way in nature the whole logical engineer thing. And yet I did it on this layout. I wanted a way to pull out the parrots beautiful colors and since the layout is meant to be fun, it kinda fit (Just like my foot into my mouth! hehehe)

Paperlicious got me inspired to try this little mini purse.
Here is my version of it using Basic Grey. The purse is small and the embellie is large so I kept it kind-of simple. I tried to make the top look like the leather edge of a real purse with the "bends". I think I should stick to layouts and cards! hehehe

Love the bag and the colors were fun to play with --- this is the simplest card I have made in ..... lets just say a long time. I always seem to have so much trouble with negative space but here I went for it and embraced it!

I am just LOVING these challenges. This week is Nightmare Before Christmas what a fun movie for a challenge. I went for a 5x7 card for this one so I would have lots of room to play. I used Bazzill paper, Tim Holtz stamps (swirls and lines on the tree) Clear embossing powder (it has a little black in it too that makes it silvery) I used my new dimensional pearls on the tree and Tim Holtz ink for some shading. Also misc. brads etc for the tree. The inside of the tree is 4 layers of UTEE with the swirl stamp pressed in it. Well here is the card:

I went to a CKC crop --- I am used to either cropping at home or doing all day, weekend or week long crops. I went to one that was like 3-1/2 hours long. Talk about frustrating. I actually did get one two page layout mostly done but with all the contests and drawings and so on I REALLY had trouble concentrating --- (I did win a paper pack WOOHOO!!! -- I usually never win anything!) So I gave up on layouts and made cards --- since I had so little space (ACK - I need to spread out!) I just used what was in easy reach. And here is what I created.

This was made to match the vase - the Celebrate is from SU.
I clear embossed the flowers to give it more interest. Mom said she thought it was beautiful. (Yay!)

This is basic grey paper and chipboard elements --- I added a lot of bling and bright colors because that is what Jenni likes - I "over decorated" the card for her. She brought it back to the dorm with her because she wants to show it off (Another Yay!)
It was a fun party and then we went to a Halloween party after.

Here is the complete gift for my mom - who is turning 80.

The "flowers" are candy coated spoons -- there are 5 different "bouquets" all different flavors, 1. chocolate with marshmellows, 2. chocolate with mint, 3. chocolate with white chocolate, 4. butterscotch, 5. chocolate, white chocolate and butterscotch. The are for dipping in coffee or hot chocolate or just eating!

Queen Kat - last two challenges

This one we had to use purple, black, white and orange but the theme could not be Halloween -- since that is "crazy" I picked a crazy pattern tp gp woth the "I'm crazy about you" saying. The orange flowers are stamped on using Tim Holtz ink with Scrappy Cat stamp. Bazzill and DCWV paper - lots of embellies!

This is a sketch - I changed the top portion from rectangular to circular - coz... I wanted to. The stamp is SeeDs Paper is Basic Gray.

Ok -Challenge 3 for SF and the Queens Challenge - Fall theme with at least two stamps
I stamped the leaves then cut them out to use as masks. I placed them on the vellum and sprayed with a mini mister using perfect pearls and tim holts reinker mix. Then I stamped the leaves onto the vellum. I stamped the pumpkins - masking as needed and then sponged in the ink and embossed them. A little ribbon, a decorative paperclip, bling and pop dots and thats it!

Second half of the Queens Challenge the recipe page: I used the sprayed mask pieces ( each one individually stamped!) coz they looked so pretty and Stickled the apple. My first recipe card ever.

This is Challenge Day

I am soooo needing some inspiration so I am VERY thankful to the ladies that came up with these challenges. Since I missed my scrap weekend I have been using these Challenges to get my Christmas Cards done.
The MSN group I am a member of is called Scrapping Friends. They have five challenges for this weekend. This meets the first challenge which was a layout.

This also meets the Basic Grey Challenge as it has scallops and Basic Grey.
This uses Basic Grey, DCWV and Bazzill paper, ribbon, stamp from OT (Stazon ink), inside stamp from Art Warehouse (Ranger Ink), Dew Drops (thanks Nicole!) Oh and don't forget the pop dots!

Another WCD Challenge

This one is to use blue, black , stamp and emboss
I am focusing on getting my Christmas Cards done so it was a bit of a challenge
The base of the card is embossed --- using the Art Warehouse stamp (and Versa Mark ink) The paper is Bazzill, and some from my stash - the lace is from my stash too. I inked the edge of the paper and stamped in Tim Holtz silver paint Dabber using Fiskars letter stamps to spell out Silent Night the brads are from OT and Pop Dots!

The ribbon is from Sharon's stash (thanks for sharing!) and the brads are from Oriental Trading. Oh and Pop Dots!

KWerner Color Challenge

I am having fun creating in my studio today. I gave KWerners challenge a try - here are the colors:

I used clear emboss and the resist technique -- I inked with Tim Holtz inks (the stamp is from Hero Arts) The ribbon is from Stampin Up and the paper is from scraps and of course Bazzill --- and Pop dots!
It is a pretty simple card but I like it.

Cute Card Thursday

The challenge was Christmas Animals ---- ummm nope ---no stamps
So I used my Changito stamp and Christmassy'd it up with a hat stamp from Northwoods (as well as Studio G for the words).

The paper is Bazzil and Imagination Project . I colored the Monkeys and Hat in red and green with my Koh-i-noor pencils. Then I added some stickles --- used my CM oval cutters and small circle punch. Some Stampin Up ribbon, bling and Pop Dots!

Here are the invites I made -- kept them simple as I made 12 of them.

I embossed them all using the cuttlebug-- stamped the title using some of those Target dollar stamps - woo hooo -- and added a little ribbon.

Just a Card

Here is a card I made this morning just cause I love this paper. I picked it up at the Fiskars booth at the Scrapfest (the lady gave me a 4 x 12 piece YAY!) Can't remember the brand name but I loved it.

I added some flowers I got in a Marah Johnson class and some Miss ELizabeth ribbon - The stamps are from CTMH and I embossed them. Oh and You Guessed it! Pop-dots!

The pumpkin stamp was from Target's dollar spot -- score! The Happy Thanksgiving is from Stampendous. The pumpkins are colored with Koh-i-noor pencils with a blending stump.

Not another notebook!

Yep
This one is for my 3 year old great niece - she loves the color green and has a younger brother in the house. SO I needed to use green - something fun for a 3 year old - and keep all the item attached to the notebook in case her brother got a hold of it.
SO here is what I came up with -- the ribbon is taped down the whole length

The paper is DCWV - All dressed up stack - I thought the animal prints would be fun. I used cloth flowers attached with brads to hopefully keep them more durable.

Tina tagged me --- it was a while back but I missed it with all the 'stuff' going on. So here we are now trying to play catch up. Now I realize I am WAY behind as I was tagged by Vanja too. Obviously not the expert blogger here!!!

This is not my favorite card but it does have a certain charm. I made this for the Alzheimer Thank You challenge

I was looking for a challenge when I happened across this whopper of one! WOW at the generosity of ALL the companies involved and the people too!!!

I only have one family member that has been effected and that person has since passed so I will be sending cards to the recommended address. I made this one for the challenge but I will also send a few from my stash.

My goal with this card was to ensure it had a hand made look as so much of the work these people do is hands-on. I wanted them to know I took TIME to thank them considering all the TIME they put in. Therefore there is a LOT of hand writing and drawing.

I used Bazzil paper and Basic Grey (inside), ribbon from my stash, book plate (thanks Sharon!), mixed flowers from my stash, brads from JoAnns that I got as part of a swap. I used a Heidi Swapp mask, Tim Holtz ink with perfect pearls in a mini mister to get the base design on the first page.

Well with the wordy stuff out of the way - here is the card!

Christmas Card

Ahhhhh..... some studio time!

This uses Bazzill carstock and BoBunny patterned paper. I used K werners template again -- This time I trimmed the card back to match. Hero Arts stamps (words) and Oriental Trading stamp (tree) with Ranger ink, I used glue dots to get the perfect round glittered ornament and on the tree stump I painted on glue and used brown glitter - the star and the garland are stickled, ribbon from the BoBunny booth at ScrapFest and pop dots!!!

I am sitting on the floor of my hotel room trying to quietly blog while my family sleeps. I try to keep my blog mostly about crafting but this post will be mostly personal so feel free to skip if you are here for the crafting.

First - thank you very much for the condolences - it means a lot that you would take the time and that you are praying for me and my family. This has been a whirlwind of seeing family (very good) and missing Rocky (my very much missed dad in law). People have been wonderful about dropping off food which is very much needed with the size of this family.

The visitation was yesterday and it was open casket - just one look at Rocky annd I knew that my friend and 'dad' was gone. We were only looking at a shell. The service was very nice as they had the kids say the rosary. As a none catholic I hope you understand when I say THAT was a little repetitive and LONG. But it was nice to see the six kids standing up there even if they looked SUPREMELY uncomfortable. They had some pity on them as they let my husband and his brother Paul say the last rosary together.

Later, my husband went up and talked about how concerned his father was about world events and the welfare of those in the world - it was very touching. Then my daughter Annabelle (Bella) went up and talked about how she would miss her granddad and how his art (he painted) inspired her. She was the only granchild to get up and speak and quite a few holdouts lost it (started crying) at that point.

After the service everyone went back too 'mom's' house annd the feeding started again! I have spent a ton of time cooking -- I KNOW - I don't cook! But it had to be done. Today is the funeral and we have the midnight flight back to Minnesota. I miss my home, my cat and my crafting. I feel like I havenn't been able to destress this whole trip. I hope I have my mojo when I get home because as Tim Holtz would say - I need some studio time!

Thanks again for the warm wishes and I hope to return to the 'regularly scheduled programming' soon.

I just need to start packing. So I took a break and made a card. This is for Challenge SCTL7 http://stampinglinkstolove.blogspot.com/.

This week is just add leaves. You need to have at least 5 leaves on your card.
Here is my entry. Since things have been so sad around here lately I wanted to remind myself to smile

The paper leaves are from Prima and the brad leaves are from my stash. The paper is from Basic Grey and Bazzill and yes it is the same paper as on the last card. The smile is a sticker - I dont remember the vendor but I got it at Target. The stamp is from Northwoods - (background on the paper) I used Ranger esspresso ink with vintage photo distress embossing powder. Everything is inked in ColorBox ink from a Que. The bling is from Kaiser.

It may not be my best card but it made me smile!

edit: To answer a question: the paper is Desire and Pearl from the Scarlet Letter Collection from Basic Grey --- this is the 8x8 paper version which I like better for card making --- I know now I buy paper in two different sizes not only 2 different patterns --- makes my hubby want to cry (well not really - I made the crying part up! hehehe)

my father in law passed away this morning. We are catching a flight to LA Friday am. In the mean time this is the card I made for my mom-in-law.

my dad in law was a great guy. he and I used to have long chats. I will miss him - he died this morning unexpectedly from a heart attack - he was 80.

KWerner Color Challenge

I love these. This week here are the colors and the inspiration:

I loved that there was just a touch of the blue in the shower curtain
So I mage the following card with just a touch of blue

I used Bazzil and Basic Grey paper, SU White Ink with White embossing powder. The writing is a Hero Arts stamp and the scalloped stamp is CTMH.
The ribbon is from my stash and the letters are Twinkle Type. I love how the colors play together!

Notebook Tutorial

OK I am giving a tutorial a go. NO GIGGLING! OK a little giggling might be fun! hehehehe So you all probably already know how to do this but I added a few tricks I have learned along the way - hope this helps.
This is the notebook that I am covering. I get these for 50 cents each at Target during school starting season!

Pick 3 12x12 pieces of paper - One for the front cover, one for the binding and one for the lining. I also pick some matching ribbon at least 30" (optional).
Taking the cover paper (I chose the stripes) and the binding paper (I chose the dots) Cut both pieces in half. Keep 2 cover pieces and one binding piece. You should have 3 12x6 pieces

Turning over the cover paper, mark the cover pieces on the wrong side. Measure in 3/4" from the left side and make a line. Also measure 1-1/8" from the top and the bottom and make a line. Trim the top and bottom left corner pieces off cutting at an angle as shown. Repeat for the second cover.

Taking the binding paper measure 1-1/8" from the top and the bottom and make a line. Fold the lining paper in half creasing gently cut along the center up to the line as shown (do both the top and the bottom)

Fold over all the lines you have drawn - no need to use a bone folder here - finger folding will do --- here are how your pieces should look

Take one of the cover pieces and tape all the way around the edges to get a good seal --- I use a Scotch tape gun but sticky strip would work as well. Put a bit of tape in the middle as well to avoid puckering. Throughout this tutorial I will emphasize taping well. It REALLY increases the life of the book.

Line up the cover paper with the book using the drawn lines as a guide. I prefer to close the top and bottom first then the edge as I think it looks cleaner.
Press down the paper on the cover and make sure you dont have any puckering. Repeat on the other cover so that both front and back are covered.

Tape up the binding paper along all edges and some in the middle.
Lay the book open flat to line it up press down one side. Then close the book and bend down the second side. This is to ensure your book closes with the binding in place.

Open your book up and look at the top and bottom flaps. Trim them in to the angle shown to fit around the notebook paper - I take the little piece and glue it down because I think it looks neater but you could just remove it. Then fold the flap up to cover. Don't worry about it being perfect - you are gong to cover most of this up later. Do all 4 areas.

I like to add a ribbon between the binding and the cover paper -- if you are going to add it do it now --- also add any brads or other through elements now if you want them hid by the lining. I tape down (with my tape gun again!) the ribbon the whole way -- but you could leave a little not taped down to hold a pen or add a loop for a pen.

Next I cut my lining --- Trim the lining piece to 12x9 (this step is to allow you to have a nice 12x3 scrap)-- then make two pieces of 6x9 each. From the remaining (12x6) binding paper cut two 2x9 pieces.
Tape the 6x9 and the 2x9 together to form one 7x9 piece as shown. Aligning this on a grid helps. Also if you want to add a ribbon to the lining intersection now is the time as you can fold the flaps under the lining. I like the way this looks as-is so I didn't add it here.

Tape all around the edges with a couple of swipes in the middle and place the lining in -- repeat for the back.

Then finish decorating and enjoy!

I got mail!!!

I had sent Sharon a small token and LOOK what she sent me back - I am sooo spoiled! Sharon sent me some fun gifts in the mail (thank you!!!)

The plastic is to be used for paper piercing templates (LOVE all the fun shapes) she got these for SOOO cheap - she is a GREAT shopper. The mounting dots are like 8" by 6" they are HUGE and have TWO sheets in the pack - she found them at the dollar store --- with my love for pop dots these are VERY much appreciated! And she got me a NEW embossing folder! I just got the cuttlebug so this is just perfect! And the Tim Holtz Distress Embossing Powder -- woohoo.
I am in heaven! Thank you Thank you Thank you!

for lots of these covered notebooks. I am making a lot of these for Christmas gifts this year as I think they are so fun (and with college tutition I need to do some cost savings on the old Holiday bills!) So these will be supplimenting my holiday gifts this year for lots of people!

I think the All Dressed up stack from DCWV is perfect for these - I added some black glittered brads and some clear dew drops as well. I kept this one a little plain - more 'adult like'.

OK looking back at the cards I made yesterday, I think I can just see how tired I was getting -- I really like cards 1 to 3 but 4 and 5??? they are OK but I think they may need some work. Should I let them be and move on or fix 'em up? hmmmm

Can't do more the look at them right now as I have a kitten cuddling in my lap - I am typing one handed! hehehe

I turned the challenge on the side again. Keep having to play with the design. I am feeling the fall colors a bit and I am definitely INTO brown right now. This card has Basic Grey paper, Tim Holtz Distressed Embossing and Ink both Vintage Photo color, K&I Vellum Paper (Flowers), Bazzil Bling Flower and Bloom (thank you Lori for the gift!), The bloom stamp is from scraptivity, Some CrafT bronze rub-on, Ribbon and brad from my stock AND pop dots! hehehe
